Things are still very much up-in-the-air in Japan. The news about the situation at the Fukushima power plant continues to shift and change and contradict itself. So, while I'm still watching and hoping for the best, I'm trying to move the situation to the back of my mind as there are so many things happening here that require my attention.

And those things aren't merely personal. It isn't just that I have papers to write, and conferences to apply for, and responsibilities to the journal that I'm a co-editor for or the upcoming university conference that I got roped back into helping out on. There are also wider political issues - the broader implications of the union reform that is currently ongoing in many corners of the country and the need to shut down my governor's despicable budget plan (which will cut education spending by 50% in the same breath as it gives tax breaks to corporate interests).

We're living in interesting times, indeed. I only hope they wind up being interesting (thought-provoking) and not interesting (something you wouldn't put in your mouth).
