So, before I left Tokyo I set aside about $40 US to get me out to the airport on my last day. But when I went to get it out of the drawer I'd placed it in, it wasn't there. I decided not to panic because a) I figured I'd probably put it in a "safe" place, and b) I had the necessary funds to take me out to the airport anyway.

When I got home and unpacked everything, I searched the obvious places, and not-so obvious places, for that $40. But I looked in the pages of every single book in my possession to no avail. The cash was gone. I wondered if perhaps the kinsei (cash fairies) had raided my room,* and I became convinced that someone, or something, must have taken that money. Or I just put it in such a "safe" place that the next occupant of my room was going to one day find themselves very happy indeed.

Today, it occurred to me--for reasons that require no exposition--that I was going to need a calendar. So I went and grabbed my little hand calendar out of my backpack. As I flipped it open, I noticed some yen bills in the back.

Yeah, my $40.

So, should I hold onto it until next year? Or should I go have it changed back into US dollars? Decisions, decisions, decisions. One thing's for sure, though: I should avoid putting it in a "safe" place at all costs.

* I completely made up the word kinsei. Just so you know.
