Another Day at Ueno Park.
Aug. 7th, 2008 07:46 pmI met up with Eunja again this afternoon for lunch and hanging out. This time we went to Ueno Park. The weather has been warm and muggy for the past few days, so we spent a good deal of our time inside the station-connected department stores before we wandered out into the park. Eunja had never been to the Bentendo Temple or seen the beautiful lotus pond over there, so I led her there.
I was delighted to find that we were in time for the lotus blooms, which had speckled the luscious greenery in varying shades of pink. It was truly beautiful, and Eunja was very pleased with it. I was happy to be able to show her something she'd never realized was there. I'm no local, but I've gotten to know a bit about this old city.
We whiled away the afternoon talking about various subjects, the complexity of which continues to astonish me. I still make a lot of mistakes with grammar--because what I know doesn't always come out of my mouth like I want it to--but I am completely capable of conversing with someone in Japanese almost like I would in English. That is a hell of an improvement, and I owe a lot of it to my time with Eunja. I'm so thankful that we met on the plane, a lovely bit of providence.
Around five, when visitors from the numerous surrounding museums were making their way out of the park, we headed for this fun little street near the station that's known for its cheap goods. We did a fair bit of window browsing, admiring clothes, shoes, luggage, accessories, fish, fruits, dried foods, and more as we walked. I found another absolutely awesome T-shirt, which I will wear to class tomorrow. Not only is it hilarious, it also suits my well-known narcissism to an amusing degree. ;)
We'll be meeting again twice next week: once, just us girls and again, when we have dinner--as promised--with her husband and friends. I'm very excited about that dinner. It's taking place on my last night in the city, after the horror of the final exam, and when everything is already prepped for my return. I expect it to be a send-off worthy of remembrance.
For the rest of the week I also have plans to see Fujiko once more, to meet up with my friend Rigusuru, to have drinks with my boy T., and to study, study, study. I still want to post about reconnecting with Rigusuru after a year, going to see the Edogawa Fireworks last weekend, and any other number of things, but I suspect I may not have time to blog for the next week. This is the zero-hour, after all. I probably won't even get around to posting the rest of my pictures until after I get back to the States, and I apologize in advance for that.
If I don't get back on before then, I'll see you all on the other side and thanks so much for reading, commenting, and just generally being the totally awesome folks that you are.
Peace out, yo.
