Nara deer and other observations.
Jan. 13th, 2010 02:35 amBecause I am a sick and wrong person, this report - about the dangers of feeding the deer in Nara things other than specially-made deer crackers (which can be yours for a nominal fee) - really amuses me. Maybe it's because I dislike the deer in Nara and don't particularly mind if they eat plastic and die. I dunno... I did say I was sick and wrong, so.
In other news, school is officially back in. Over the break, I discovered (or determined) that a) you should never go anywhere in Japan without Fukuzawa*, that b) someone really ought to make a "Please do it at home" Tokyo Metro sign that shows a man committing suicide, and that c) getting things accomplished - obscure temples located, complicated assignments completed - is all just a matter of having enough grit (and if you don't have enough you're done for).
I also had a fantastic time partying and pilgrimaging with friends and loved ones. Let's go 2010!
* Fukuzawa Yukichi was an Edo/Meiji era author, entrepreneur, and everything else under the sun. He appears on the 10,000 yen note (roughly equivalent to $100), and it has become something of a habit among certain IUCers to inquire as to whether or not they ought to take Fukuzawa with them on varying excursions.
