"At the level of community, failure to attain the Great Equilibrium was caused by the imposition of obstacles to the circulation of 'essences' (qi). For example, in relations between the sexes, sexual abstinence was condemned because it upset the interaction of yin (female) and yang (male) essences, and the killing of infant girls was severely condemned because the practice caused an imbalance in the strength of yin and yang" emphasis mine.
