I was standing at the kitchen sink after breakfast on Saturday, preparing to do the morning dishes. I turned the water faucet on, and suddenly the house turned into a boat. The sink, the floors, the walls, and I went up and down, up and down on swells. It was the damndest thing.

My first coherent thought was that I had broken the house somehow. I immediately turned off the sink faucet and put my hands out on the counter to steady myself. However, when the shaking didn’t stop it suddenly dawned on me that I was in an earthquake. In fact, I was in a stronger earthquake than I had ever been in before.

When it was over, and it only lasted about thirty seconds or so, I went to the TV to see if there was news. (I was rather unable to quite bring myself to believe I’d just been in an earthquake.) Turning the TV on, I learned that a large quake had hit just off the north-east shore and that the prefectures of Fukushima (just north of Tochigi, where I was) and Miyagi had been warned of possible tsunamis.

Knowing what it is to be worried, I sent messages to friends and loved ones immediately. Ultimately, the damages and injuries appear to have been blessedly light, a fact that makes me very happy. I had always secretly wanted to be in a largish, though non-dangerous, earthquake... just to see what it was like...

Those last 2 lines were so true and yet so quirky that it made me LOL and reminded me of how much I love you.

Thanks, dear. I guess a spade is always going to be a spade, or something like that. ;] I'm really getting my fill of earthquakes this go-round. There was another the day before yesterday, around midnight. Woke me up, and I lay in my bed while the floors shook and the walls groaned. Apparently, Japan is sitting on five separate tectonic plates...

Love you and be seeing you soon. I'm in town again from the 14th to the 19th of August.
