I went to the Tokyo National Museum yesterday and bought almost $150 worth of art books, and I’m not the least bit sorry about it either. God invented credit cards for a reason.

The 100-yen-store made the transition to discount store at the weekend as the signs (evidently) promised. I’ve been taking pictures of the whole process, and will post them just as soon as the cycle is completed.

I am really fascinated by your stories about the 100-yen store. Can't wait for the pix! ;-)

Seconded. What art books did you get?

I picked up a couple issues of Nihon no bitjutsu: one on the Kitano Tenjin Engi emaki and one on rokudo-e. I also picked up a second magazine on Kitano Tenjin Engi emaki--it's my m.a. thesis topic--and some other books on Kannon iconography, supernatural-themed art in the works of Kuniyoshi and Yoshitoshi, and the Genji. [Btw--I saw your post on the recently discovered Genji text... awesome stuff!] I also nabbed a cool two-volume masterworks set and bought a museum catalog for the big Asahi Shinbun sponsored exhibit, "Dueling Geniuses" that's on right now.

And then I went on amazon and ordered more Tenjin-related stuff. I have no idea how I'm going to get it all home yet, but my thesis is going to rock. ;]
