I had a really nice and reaffirming conversation with my adviser today. I love how she's fairly hands-off with the project when she needs to be but actually really on top of things. For the most part she hasn't required regular meetings or powwows or anything of the kind, but periodically she just drops a little, tiny, "how's the thesis going?" into our discussion.

Today we were talking about VRL projects, and she popped the "how's the thesis going?" question in. I was able to tell her about how I'm doing a little restructuring, how I organized my introduction to really jump the paper straight into a clear research agenda, and how I've found some fascinating things in the original text of the handscroll I'm working on. Then I gave her my deadline for the rough draft--two weeks from today (which is fantastically soon, but ultimately a wise decision, I think... I'd rather have hysterics now than have them at the end of term along with all the other hysterics I'll be having then)!

She seems to feel that I'm on top of things, which is good. I wish that I felt I was on top of things, but the deadline will force that issue no matter what. And anyway, the fabulous Professor E. recently told me that I shouldn't sweat it. "It's just a master's thesis," was his phraseology. So I'm not going to sweat it... if I can manage that. I think I will as soon as I get through the last of the foundational background that I'm working on and jump into the visual analysis.

Whoot.

do any of us EVER feel on top of things? I somehow doubt it.
