I do have to say, though, that as a native Californian, I am horribly, horribly ashamed to find that Proposition 8 appears to have passed.

It makes me doubt that Americans truly want change. We undoubtedly want economic change, but some of us seem to be permanently stuck in monster-mode. (For the record, I don't really think these people are monsters, but I do think religion has made them somewhat feeble-minded. But religion does that to everyone, so...)

I really hope that the "No on Prop. 8" campaign can limp to a narrow victory here, but I greatly fear that equal-rights just took another huge hit. I mean, if we can't get that kind of equality in California, of all places, things look horrible for the parts of this country that are still living in the dark ages.

On the bright side, however, Prop. 4--the abortion law--was defeated, as were all the other abortion initiatives on the ballot this year, including that totally ridiculous one in Colorado.

I was looking forward to a narrow win myself.

But, it's final. I feel dirty to live here now.
We jump up and down to defend rights... only to take them away?
WTF.

We give animals more rights and room to move, yet take them away from humans...

Ah, but it's still progress. The more referenda are put on ballots, the more consciousness is raised, and the more debate takes place. Sometimes enlightenment is a process, not an epiphany.

This process is going to be costly, however. This was not a simple ballot measure that passed in California--they're rewriting the California Constitution to specify that marriage is between one man and one woman. Effectively, the church just got inextricably tied to the state on this particular issue. It makes my blood boil.

That is about the size of it.
It was going down for sure until they started the fear tatics.

They had adds saying that if this was not passed, churches would loose their tax-exempt status, and that gay marrage would become a required subject for grade school students.

Both being false... enough beleved it.
