Am realizing quite abruptly that I really didn't want to write a paper about the Hokke kyô; I just wanted to use research about the Hokke kyô to learn more about Tendai Buddhism and call it a day.

[sigh]

Not that that has anything to do with the price of beans in Peru.

Well, that explains a lot. I knew the Hokke-kyo was the Lotus Sutra (picked up that factoid somewhere along the line, I guess) but didn't know the kanji for it...

One day, as I was reading something someone was writing about Fujiwara Hokke (藤原北家, The Northern Fujiwara), I realized that it makes perfect sense that hokke should mean "northern house"... and so, wait, if that's the case, then I must have been mistaken about the Lotus Sutra. After all, 蓮 is read hasu or ren, not hokke.

And now it all makes sense again.

It actually gets even more confusing when you realize that the famous 平家経 are mainly 法華経. And it's kind of weird (and also not at all weird) how "flower of the law" becomes lotus　(蓮華) in translation. 日本語かっこいいわね…
