I'm not sure whether or not I've specifically mentioned before on this blog that the language school I'm at right now is really, really hard. (Hard as in "rigorous," not hard as in "oh my gosh, I just can't understand anything!") In the first week alone, when there have only been morning classes, the workload has pretty much kept me up nights drilling and prepping. Consequently, I've been feeling rather like a social life wasn't going to be on my list of "doables."

However, while my "Day" Life appears to be utterly spoken for, I think there's hope for my "Night" Life. The other day I got back in touch with an old friend of mine by a purely delightful fluke. ("Got back in touch with" is really not the right phrase... we've never lost contact with one another. It's more like, suddenly, after two years, we discovered that we essentially live in the same town again.) Last night, he sent me a message that said, "Party in Shibuya. You should come."

And I thought, "I should." So I did.

And I danced the night away in a packed to the rafters club with my good buddy, Rei (who's a fantastic dancer). It was just what the doctor ordered, frankly. Sometimes, I just need to be away from everyone, but other times I really need to be out with people giving and receiving energy. After a grueling week, the chance to decompress like this was a godsend. We hit the floor hard for over four hours, and it was spectacular. I tend to forget just how much I like to club.

Best moment of the evening (aside from Rei's and my reunion moment at Shibuya Station): at one point, a dance circle formed around this guy wearing an afro wig. He began trading it off to different people, who would then take their place in the center of the circle and demonstrate some moves. Eventually the wig came to me, and I took the opportunity to totally bust it out while twenty-some-odd folks grooved around me, cheering and whistling.

So. Awesome.

I doubt that finances (and, let's be honest here, time) will permit me to do this kind of clubbing on a regular basis. But you can bet it's going to happen again.

Absolutely. It just takes some time to settle into the routine and be used to it. Soon the workload won't seem quite as kurushii.

Also, the last term (I forget if it's quarters or trimesters) the class/workload gets much lighter, ostensibly to give you more time to work on your final projects, but in any case, much lighter.

Plus, there's always weekends. Even if you spend all day Sunday (and maybe Saturday too) working, you have Fri & Sat evening to hang out :)

I was worried about the same thing at this point in the program, but no worries - it'll all work out.

Yes, I'm not surprised that's the case. I think a lot of time gets sucked up early on in figuring out the most efficient way to get the studying done, what works for you in terms of remembering the lessons, etc.

A lot of what I come up against, however, is plain old exhaustion. I have time, but I want to sleep during it. ;> I pushed past it on Friday, but when you do that you have to factor in recuperation time. Heh.

Thanks for the reassurances, though. I'm sure you're right. =)
