Chris Rock is the Man (and Other News).
Oct. 2nd, 2009 09:10 pmChris Rock has always been a hero of mine, and with his latest comments (on the Jay Leno show) about the unfolding Roman Polanski case he's gone up even more in my estimation.

I've been considering a larger post on the Polanski issue... a kind of examination of the concept of scandal and art. I may get to that later this weekend, as it's something that's been much on my mind lately.
In the meantime, it's work, work, work. (What else is new?) The classwork is impressively weighty, but the teachers really know what they're doing and I'm so happy to be in this program. We sat in on our first lecture of the year, and that was a blast. The speaker was making an effort to give her talk in watered-down Japanese for us, but I understood the whole lecture (which was a great feeling) and she even showed some very interesting Meiji-era ukiyoe (or, I suppose they're starting to be shin hanga by that point?) prints.
In addition to everything else that's been going on here, I've been thinking a lot about where exactly I want to take my dissertation studies. I'm really hoping that IUC will provide me with the time and exposure to do just that.
