1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
I went to a movie premiere and hobnobbed with some of my favorite Japanese cinema auteurs. Not that I expect to make a habit of it, but...

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I actually did keep my resolution; it inspires me to make more. Last time I resolved to give it my almost-all and leave some time for partying. This time I resolve to kick academic ass and take scholarly names.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes. My one cousin gave birth to her first child. And my other cousin gave birth to her third.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes.

5. What countries did you visit?
England.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
A love life. I think I'm slowly, but surely, getting to a stage in my studies where I could spare the time I need to devote to such an enterprise.

7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I'll always remember July 11, 2011 as the day I got my mojo back.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I passed my comprehensive exams with flying colors.

9. What was your biggest failure?
My first stand-alone teaching experience; I've got a lot to learn before I become the complete type of teacher that I want to be.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Fortunately not.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
A kitten.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My father's. He's the toughest person I know.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Everyone in America who's down on the 99% movement and especially the police and their overlords.

14. Where did most of your money go?
To my mortgage (quelle surprise, no?).

15. What did you get really excited about?
The comprehensive exam process (if not the actual exams themselves), presenting at a conference in Oxford, IUC reunions, monster theory, taking the fine art of making fun of Twilight to a whole new level of awesome.

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
"Carry" by Tori Amos.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
- i. happier or sadder?
Happier by far.
- ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter, I think, but I've been eating gummi cherries and spice cookies all term. (They help me think. ;)) I should slim down again shortly.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Cooking for myself.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Fretting.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Eating, drinking, and being merry with my dad, my BFF, an old friend from high school, and a bunch of really awesome San Diego peeps that I'd just met.

21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
No.

22. Did you fall out of love in 2011?
No.

23. What was your favorite TV program?
Doctor Who.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I allow no man to belittle my soul...

25. What was the best book you read?
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

26. What were your greatest musical discoveries?
Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine, Camélia Jordana, Little Boots, Amanda Palmer (rediscovered), Igor Stravinsky (rediscovered).

27. What did you want and get?
Progress.

28. What did you want and not get?
I'm not really sure.

29. What were your favorite films of this year?
Yakuza Weapon, Harry Potter 7.2, X-Men: First Class, Source Code, Attack the Block.

30. What did you do on your birthday?
What did I do on my birthday...?

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Professional vamp.

32. What kept you sane?
Wednesdays.

33. Which celebrity/public figures did you fancy the most?
I didn't really fancy anyone. Maybe I've finally outgrown that.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
We are the 99%.

35. Who did you miss?
Those whose time has passed.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
My monsters-and-the-monstrous compatriots.

37. What was a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.
The past exists to remind us that it is gone.

38. New Year's plans?
Partying in Chicago with my boy Rocky Choi.
