I have no good answer, but I long ago accepted this fundamental truth. Like hamsters and sushi, they just don't keep very long. Because of this I try not to spend too much on them. :-)
Yes, I've noted that most headphones have a span of six-to-twelve months at the absolute best. I've taken to buying mine in dollar shops. But it is frustrating. My latest pair decided to die the exact same day I determined to use my iPod for Chinese drills. [sigh]
my theory, is that in an attempt to keep them as light weight as possible, they skimp on materials where they can, which is everywhere but the speaker itself, so the connections, casing, and cord end up being really kind of crap, this is mostly true in earbuds where the entire weight of the headphones is being supported by your ear canal.
I agonize over the perceived quality and desired functionality. My latest gripe about ear buds? Virtually none of them have 90-degree elbow connectors. They're all made with the ipod in mind and as such are straight. I ended up settling for such a pair, but other than that they pretty much are quite nice. I wanted elbow ones for my Sirius Stiletto S2 receiver (better than an ipod for me) so I can put it in my pocket or bag and not mess the cord up - now I have to put it in upside down because of the cord sticking out so far. Time will tell how long they last, but I'm generally pretty good with my stuff.
