Creepy and Kooky.
Apr. 9th, 2007 02:45 pmSo I had my first, and inevitable, creepy Japanese house moment the other night. I was in the living room, watching Japanese variety shows and doing a little studying, when Fujiko-san announced that she was going to go over to a friend's house for a little while. I answered that that was fine as I was tired anyway and would probably go to bed soon. (I get up much earlier than the family does.)
After she had gone I realized that I would have to go up stairs - extreme steep, narrow, and curving stairs - in the semi-dark. So, I did my dark in stages routine. I turned on all the lights downstairs, and turned on the lights to the stairs, and turned on the lights in my room - leaving the door wide open. Then I went back downstairs and began turning off the lights as I went. But when I turned off the stair light the curvature of the steps made it very dark - regardless of the lights in my room.
I didn't want to leave the electricity running unnecessarily, so up I went, with full darkness behind me. I made it about halfway before my subconscious mind conjured up a full-blown image of the woman with the long black hair climbing the stairs behind me. Then I panicked, took the stairs two at a time, slammed the door shut behind me, and hopped - in one smooth motion - from the door into the futon.
Later I noticed that the stair light has two switches - one at the foot and one at the head, right by my bedroom door. So I basically geeked out for nothing.
