Roughly three years ago, I was sitting in a darkened art history classroom - diligently taking notes and observing slide images - when I was suddenly confronted with the Genji monogatari emaki. From that time, I knew I wanted to make Japanese art history my field of expertise. I fell heedlessly and irrevocably in love with yamato-e ("paintings in the Japanese style") in that single moment.

Today, I stood less than a foot away from the work of art that changed my life. I saw it with my own two eyes - traced its still-elegant lines with my finger hovering over the protective glass, coveted its silent beauty amid the murmuring crowd of onlookers.

I cannot even begin to express how humbling and affecting an experience it was. Suffice to say, it was something like falling in love all over again. And I'm in it for the long haul. Straight up.
