With the passage of a new law that can guarantee a divorced women up to one half of her ex-husband's pension, some salarymen are finally finding the necessary motivation to be nicer to their spouses. In response to the potential crisis, some men have joined clubs that give lessons on how to be a better husband. Apparently, one can shoot for a "black-belt" (as it were) in husbanding. Only in Japan.
Of course, on the one hand there is a level of chagrin that, seemingly, only economic concerns can prompt Japanese men to be kind to their wives (note: this is an extreme and somewhat facetious generalization on my part) or prompt Japanese women to stand up to years of neglect, but whatever works does - after all - work. Here's to hoping that the recent spikes in divorce filings taper off under the guidance of newly forming "husband schools."
